When The Smiths released their debut self-titled album (pictured above) in 1984, nobody could have known what would happen next. A virtually unknown band from Manchester had found themselves with a bona fide hit on their hands that pushed its way into the #2 position on UK charts. Although their success was short lived as a working band, as of their breakup in 1987, they managed to release almost 20 singles and 7 albums since their inception in 1982.
Stephen Patrick Morrissey’s endless lamentations and stunning falsetto endeared him to an audience of young people. Complemented by an excellent band, The Smiths are still widely regarded as one of the seminal bands of the 1980s with their debut album at the forefront.
The Smiths covered territory that was controversial and influential without taking itself so seriously as to forget a little light-hearted fun.
