Special Edition: The Residents 30, September 2008
If you like obscure or avant garde music at all, chances are you’ve at least heard of The Residents. The collaborative group whose members remain secret at all times began in the late 60s creating experimental music that pushed the boundaries of conventional thought on the subject. Adding in visual stimuli, The Residents have also applied their name to various videos and cartoons, as well as the wacky costumes they wear on stage (most notably the “Eyeball Men”).
Their latest album The Bunny Boy, is no exception to their eccentric legacy. While more listenable than some of their other albums like the infamous Commercial Album, The Bunny Boy is loaded with their signature atmosphere and oddly amusing stories. Songs like “What If It’s True?” offer moments of respite for those who need segues of more pedestrian fare to maintain their interest while leaving other tracks like “There’s Blood on the Bunny” for those of us willing to travel further down the hole.
