Bell Hollow 7, October 2008
While the vocal delivery has a strong resemblance to Morrissey’s in some ways, the instrumentation is neither Smiths nor Moz’s solo band, but closer to some of the works of Matt Johnson (see The The), creating a satisfying blend of romance and introspection. Even when they are most at the front, electric guitars and keyboards are often more atmospheric. You’ll find no guitar wankery here and many of the tracks are quite danceable.
This month’s selections from the album are “Our Water Burden” and “The Bottle Tree". You can purchase this album, as well as their EP Sons of the Burgess Shale via their website while you wait for next week to see what they have to say.
